Emotional numbness and disconnection can feel like living behind glass. Whether you think of this state as depression, burnout, or a nervous system shutdown, the experience can be debilitating. You might find yourself unable to experience any emotion and feeling disconnected from the world and your own body. Activities you once loved might feel flat or pointless, and you might end up withdrawing from people who you used to feel close to. For some, emotional numbness can lead to seeking out activities which can still make you feel something, while for others doing anything can feel too much. It is not uncommon to wonder if it’s worth continuing, or to wish you could press pause and disappear for a while. While this shutdown can seem absolute, it is a state your mind and body enter when trying to protect you and it doesn’t mean you are stuck here forever.
While there are different reasons why these feelings occur, they can be an automatic reaction to prevent you from being overwhelmed. This reaction often happens when life demands too much, either through long-term stress, a response to trauma or losing someone or something important to you. It may also occur when your natural emotions have to be hidden because it isn’t safe or possible to express them. This emotional shutdown does not always happen immediately - it may arrive many months or years later. Sometimes it appears to result from a minor issue, but when you’ve been carrying something huge for a long time (perhaps without realising), even something small can be the final straw.
Whether you know what brought you here or feel confused as to the origins of your feelings, therapy offers a space to make sense of it all. Beyond simply understanding why this is happening, we can focus on helping you feel more present and connected, at a pace that feels manageable to you.
I offer psychotherapy in Richmond, Chiswick, and online. You can find out further information about therapy with me or contact me to discuss whether therapy might be right for you.
